Faerie clock project

Faerie Clock Project

May-June 2014

Hi folks,

welcome to my Faerie Clock Project blog,  I hope you like following the project as it progressed and the item is now available for purchase in my shop.

I managed to get hold of an old tall clock that was ideal for this project and I new would make a truly beautiful unique item.  To start the project though, I have to separate the clock top from the casing which was a little tricky as it wasn't clear how it had been assembled.

As a short while, the clock was in 3 parts, the top was one, the pendulum case another and the base a third and it was ready to start prepping.

The design for the new clock face had already been decided so it was just a case now of removing the old one and clock mechanism, which unfortunately had broken so that I could get the correct measurements.

The new face, made from Plywood now needed to be carved with the design and then phyrographed to make it start out when the appropriate wood stains were added.

The case now needed to be prepped ready for new stain and artwork to be added.  This took a fair amount of time, 4 hours to be honest, to get it ready.

I wanted to make the sides of the clock to be a feature as well as the front so a faerie design was chosen for the two side raised panels that would fit in with the clock face.

Once I as happy with the sides of the clock, I needed a design for the top front and sides that would not only look great, but also tie in with the clock face.  The roses were chosen as there was a rose on the clock face representing 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock.

With the artwork completed, the whole clock now needed to be stained with Dark oak and teak to give it a rustic look.  The staining was then rubbed down and then protected with varnish, sealer and finally a clear lacquer.

The finished result I have achieved is stunning and would look amazing sat on a mantle over an open fire or hanging on a wall.

Altar table project

Altar Table Project

18/04/14

Well, its been a while since I did a project so I thought I'd make an Altar.  Firstly, I had to source a suitable item to use, this was found and started out as a tall bedside cupboard.

Once measured up to the appropriate size that I required it was out with the electric saw and down to size it goes.

The top of the unit was all that I required and once it had been sanded back, it gave me a good base to work from.

I chose to keep the designs simple on the altar as too much artwork would not have the desired look and would make it look too fussy.  So my choice was a large pentagram on the top with a small one on the drawer front and two triquetra symbols, one on either side.  Just to add a little extra to the drawer from, a simple Celtic knotwork design was added.

Now that the design had been added to the altar, I had to fix a new base to it so that a storage shelf could also be provided for the safe storage of bigger items.  Using the side of the cupboard, I fitted a piece into the bottom of the unit.

The cupboard was then stained using teak wood stain and by adding a little sanding technique I have given it an aged look.

Once the stain had fully dried, 4 layers of varnish were applied to give it a hard wearing coating and the drawer and base lined with black felt to protect any surface it was placed onto and any items placed in the drawer.

The hardest decision was, what to do for a drawer knob.  After a while of trying various items, of which none were suitable, I made one from slate.  Carved a triquetra onto it and then painted it gold.  After the varnish had been applied to it to protect the gold, it was attached and the altar was finished.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about this project and will tune in again for my next one.  It has been started and I will be posting regular updates on Facebook.

Once it is finished though, I will be posting the story here on my blogg.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and please come back for more.

New Age Fare 29-03-14

Well folks,
The new age fare I went to in March was a geat success.  I managed to sell some lovely items and had some really nice feedback about my work.

It was a long day, starting at 6.15am when my alarm went off and finished at 6.30pm when i got home and sat down.

There was a great turn out of stall holders selling their items and a steady flow of people throughout the whole day.

I have now got to make more new items as my next fare is in May and stocks are low, not that i'm complaining ;-).

I have a new item to add to my stock, this being a black mirror with Celtic knotwork and pentagrams and I will post more later.

Thanks for reading and keep tuned in for next update.

Latest news on New Age Carvings 04-03-2014

Latest News on New Age Carvings 04-03-2014

I can't believe how time has flown since my last update, I must apologise for this.

Where do I start, well, I have been really busy sourcing new materials, this has involved trips to distant places :) good to get out and about as I do find it hard to do that, so its a great achievement when I manage it.  One of my journeys took me to Selsey beach to collect a table, it also gave me a chance to see what horrific damage the storms had done to the coast line there.

The seats at the top car park area where covered with stones, as was the carpark, quiet frightening really to consider the strength of the water. The few pictures below show what the sea had done to the coast line.

The table that I collected is still yet to be carved and this will be coming later in the year but it well worth the journey.

Along with this trip, another trip took me to another coast line, Lee on The Solent.  Not very often do you see a tree on the beach, driftwood yes, tree, uh, no but sure enough, there it was.

I digress, I know you are all wanting to know what I have been making and what is coming up.

The first thing that is new to my store are the Door / House Plaques.  Ideal as a gift or just to dress up the entrance to your home, these hand carved plaques are one of my smaller items and have been really popular.

Next came the Blue Dragon plaque.  Wow I loved doing this item, well I would, I love dragons and this one was a stunner.  Loads of people liked it which really pleased me and needless to say it didn't stay in my store very long either.

The trips to the sea fronts were productive as it gave me a chance to find some nice pieces of drift wood and this gave me another new idea, Pendants with celtic designs or just highly polished plain wooden ones. Another really popular item and one that I am really pleased to have made.

There have been many other items produced and all of them can be seen in my portfolio or in my store.  With regards to new items coming.  I am about to start another large project, a coffee table with celtivc knotwork, Ivy and Triquetra symbols.  I am looking forward to starting this one, been a while since I have done a large item and getting itchy fingers.

I will be attending a New Age Fare in St Denys, Southampton on 29th March 2014, so please come on down to see me, it will be good to see you and I will have lots of items available and will be taking orders for any special items required.

My next update will be after this date but look out for live posts from the fare, its going to be a great day and lots of things going on all around.

Thank you for your time and please leave comments if you like these bloggs or if there is something you would like to see more of in them :)

Kind regards
Steve
